Windows and third-party app updates – frequently asked questions

Windows and third-party app updates – frequently asked questions

You can find answers to the most frequently asked questions in connection with Windows updates in LogMeIn Resolve.

Why do I see more Windows updates in LogMeIn Resolve than on my computer?

LogMeIn Resolve utilizes the same underlying Windows Update API queries as the native Windows Updates GUI to retrieve the list of available updates on a system. However, in certain scenarios, LogMeIn Resolve may show a more comprehensive list of available Windows updates compared to what is presented in the native Windows Updates GUI.

The Windows Updates GUI often applies implicit filters based on various criteria such as user experience optimization, update classification (for example, critical, recommended, optional), device applicability, and Microsoft's internal policies. As a result, certain updates — especially optional ones like preview patches or non-critical drivers — may be omitted from the GUI unless the user performs a manual check or expands the Optional updates section.

Conversely, LogMeIn Resolve does not apply such filters when querying and displaying the available updates. It presents all updates that are applicable to the device, as returned by the Windows Update API. This includes critical, recommended, optional, and driver updates, offering IT administrators a more complete and unfiltered view of the update landscape for the target device.

Can LogMeIn Resolve update third-party apps that are installed only for a specific user on a device?
Nee. LogMeIn Resolve uses Microsoft's winget tool to manage applications and keep them up to date. Updates are applied at the system level, meaning that LogMeIn Resolve can only update software that was installed for all users on a device. Applications installed for a specific user will not even appear in LogMeIn Resolve.
Tip: Third-party apps that you can update with LogMeIn Resolve are listed at https://winget.run/.
How does LogMeIn Resolve collect Windows updates data?

Each online device with the LogMeIn Resolve client installed collects information on outstanding Windows updates at least every 30 minutes and reports the results back to the Console. If the device is offline or newly enrolled, it cannot collect data on available updates. If an online device does not refresh the availability of updates for an extended period of time, reinstall the LogMeIn Resolve client.
