Moving Apple devices enrolled using Automated Device Enrollment from another MDM server to LogMeIn Resolve MDM

With Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, you can easily migrate your Apple devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM solution.

Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager lets you easily migrate your managed Apple devices from one MDM solution to another. For devices running iOS, this is done by changing the MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, and wiping the device. For devices running macOS, we recommend you wipe the device after changing the MDM server, but you can skip the factory reset.

Migrate iOS or macOS devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM server by performing a factory reset

Before you begin: You must have an Administrator or Device Enrollment Manager role in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

While changing the MDM server used for managing your devices, the devices must be wiped in order to successfully enroll them in LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

Prepare your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site and devices

  1. Integrate Automated Device Enrollment with your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.
Tip: To enroll all future devices using the LogMeIn Resolve MDM server, set the server as the default in the Default MDM Server Assignment section of your MDM server settings.
  2. Set up your desired enrollment profile in LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

Assign devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM server

  1. Navigate to Preferences > <Your current MDM server> > Show Devices and select Edit MDM Server.
  2. Select the MDM server to use for device management from the drop-down menu, then select Continue, then Confirm.
Note: You do not need to unassign devices from the current MDM server before assigning them to a new MDM server. Assigning the devices to the new server automatically overrides the previous assignment.

Enroll devices in LogMeIn Resolve MDM

  1. In LogMeIn Resolve MDM, navigate to Enrollment > Apple DEP and select Update device list.
  2. Select the devices you wish to enroll in LogMeIn Resolve MDM by their checkboxes, then select Actions > Assign enrollment profile.
Tip: To see which devices have not yet been enrolled, check the Enrollment status column.

Result: The Assign enrollment profile wizard opens.

  3. Select the enrollment profile from the Enrollment profile drop-down menu and add tags to your devices if you wish, then select Assign.
  4. Select Close to exit the Assign enrollment profile wizard.
  5. Wipe your devices using your previous MDM solution or by manually performing a factory reset on them.

Results: After a successful wipe, your devices automatically begin enrollment in LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

Migrate macOS devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM solution without performing a factory reset

With Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, you can easily migrate your Mac devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM solution without wiping them.

Before you begin: To successfully change the MDM solution used on your Mac device, the following requirements must be met:
  • You must have an Administrator or Device Enrollment Manager role in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.
  • You must have physical access to the device.
  • You must have admin privileges on the device.
These instructions can be used to enroll your Mac devices in LogMeIn Resolve MDM without having to perform a factory reset. However, we still recommend you wipe your devices when migrating them from another MDM server to avoid issues with enrollment.

Reassign your device to LogMeIn Resolve MDM in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager

  1. Integrate Automated Device Enrollment with your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.
  2. Set up your desired enrollment profile in LogMeIn Resolve MDM and assign it to the selected Mac device.
Tip: You can create multiple enrollment profiles in LogMeIn Resolve MDM and assign them to multiple devices.
  3. In Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, navigate to Devices, select the device to migrate, then select Edit MDM Server.
  4. Assign the selected device to your LogMeIn Resolve MDM server.

Remove the current MDM profile and enroll your devices in LogMeIn Resolve MDM

  1. Using your current MDM solution's instructions, remove the existing MDM profile from your device and ensure that the device is no longer managed.
  2. On the device, open the Terminal app and run the following command:
    sudo profiles renew -type enrollment

Result: The device is prompted to enroll with the new MDM profile in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

Results: The device contacts the LogMeIn Resolve MDM server and installs the enrollment profile. The device becomes supervised and appears in LogMeIn Resolve MDM for further management and configuration.
