Request times out when trying to ping a computer in Hamachi
In most cases, a "Request Timed Out" message is caused by a firewall blocking the connectivity.
Before you can ping, you'll need to ensure that the target machine has a green status indicator. If this is not the case, search our knowledge base for the color indicator you see (i.e., yellow, cyan, etc).
The first step in troubleshooting is to ensure you can ping locally. To do this:
- Go to Enter. , type cmd and press
- Type ping 127.0.0.1 and press Enter.
- If this fails, troubleshoot your firewall.
If that step was successful:
- Type ping 25.x.x.x where 25.x.x.x is your own Hamachi IP.
- If this fails, again revisit your firewall settings.
If this was successful:
- Type ping 25.x.x.x where 25.x.x.x is the IP of the target computer.
- If this fails, you'll need to troubleshoot the firewall on that machine.
If you use IPv6 protocol mode, you need to type ping -6 <IPv6 address>. For example,
ping -6 2620:9b::586:5b0c
If this is successful, you have confirmed connectivity over Hamachi via your machine and can set up the application you would like to use over it. As a double-check, we recommend confirming you can ping from the other machine to yours as well, to confirm two-way communication is successful.
Resolving Hamachi "Request Timed Out" for Windows firewall
You have to allow the Hamachi Network Adapter through the firewall to be able to ping clients using Hamachi.
You may notice that Hamachi times out when trying to ping another client, but works if you turn off Windows Firewall. In this case, allow the Hamachi Network Adapter through the firewall, as follows:
- In Windows, go to .
- In Windows Firewall, on the left side of the window, select Advanced Settings. The Windows Firewall with Advance Security window is displayed.
- At the top of the Advanced Settings window, go to .
- On the Domain Profile tab under State, look for Protected network connections and select Customize. The Protected Network Connections for the Domain Profile window is displayed.
- Under Network Connections, clear the checkbox for Hamachi. Leave all other options selected.
- Select OK to save your changes.
- Repeat steps 4-6 on both the Private Profile tab and Public Profile tab.
Now you should be able to ping clients using Hamachi.
What if 'ping' still does not work?
If the above solution does not work, try to allowlist your third-party application - that gives you the time out message - in your firewall settings. Consult your firewall's documentation for further instructions.
