Moving Apple devices enrolled using Automated Device Enrollment from another MDM server to LogMeIn Resolve MDM

With Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, you can easily migrate your Apple devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM solution.

Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager lets you easily migrate your managed Apple devices from one MDM solution to another.

For devices running iOS 18 or earlier and iPadOS 18 or earlier, this is done by changing the MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, and wiping the device. For devices running macOS 15 or earlier, we recommend you wipe the device after changing the MDM server, but you can skip the factory reset.

On iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later, changing the MDM server and re-enrolling your devices in another MDM solution does not require factory resetting your device.

Frequently asked questions

What are the differences between migration methods?
The migration method to be used mainly depends on the OS version as follows:
  • Devices running iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 or earlier can only be migrated by performing a factory reset during the migration.
  • Mac devices running macOS 15 or earlier can be migrated either by performing a factory reset (recommended) or by bypassing the factory reset.
  • Devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later can be migrated without performing a factory reset.
Which Apple devices can I migrate to LogMeIn Resolve MDM without performing a factory reset?

Devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later can be migrated without performing a factory reset. Additionally, for devices running macOS 15 or earlier, factory reset can be bypassed, but it is not recommended.

What happens to the data currently on the device during migration?
This depends on the migration method and OS version:
  • All data on devices running iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 or earlier is removed from the device, since the migration requires a factory reset.
  • If a Mac device running macOS 15 or earlier is migrated by performing a factory reset, all data is removed. If the factory reset is bypassed, all managed and personal data remains on the device.
  • Devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later are not wiped during the migration. This means that all personal data remains untouched, while managed configurations, settings, and policies are removed and must be redeployed on the device using LogMeIn Resolve MDM. Managed applications deployed through the previous MDM solution might not be removed from Mac devices. However, they are removed from iPhone and iPad devices during the unenrollment process.
Can I migrate all of my managed devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later at once?
While it is possible to migrate a large number of devices at once, we recommend doing it in batches, with at least the first group serving as a pilot group. This way, any possible feature gaps between MDM solutions can be addressed before migrating all devices.

Migrate Apple devices running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 or earlier to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM server by performing a factory reset

Before you begin: You must have an Administrator or Device Enrollment Manager role in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

While changing the MDM server used for managing your Apple devices running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 or earlier, the devices must be wiped in order to successfully enroll them in LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

Prepare your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site and devices

  1. Integrate Automated Device Enrollment with your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.
Tip: To enroll all future devices using the LogMeIn Resolve MDM server, set the server as the default in the Default MDM Server Assignment section of your MDM server settings.
  2. Set up your desired enrollment profile in LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

Assign devices to LogMeIn Resolve MDM server

  1. Navigate to Preferences > <Your current MDM server> > Show Devices and select Edit MDM Server.
  2. Select the MDM server to use for device management from the drop-down menu, then select Continue, then Confirm.
Note: You do not need to unassign devices from the current MDM server before assigning them to a new MDM server. Assigning the devices to the new server automatically overrides the previous assignment.

Enroll devices in LogMeIn Resolve MDM

  1. In LogMeIn Resolve MDM, navigate to Enrollment > Apple DEP and select Update device list.
  2. Select the devices you wish to enroll in LogMeIn Resolve MDM by their checkboxes, then select Actions > Assign enrollment profile.
Tip: To see which devices have not yet been enrolled, check the Enrollment status column.

Result: The Assign enrollment profile wizard opens.

  3. Select the enrollment profile from the Enrollment profile drop-down menu and add tags to your devices if you wish, then select Assign.
  4. Select Close to exit the Assign enrollment profile wizard.
  5. Wipe your devices using your previous MDM solution or by manually performing a factory reset on them.

Results: After a successful wipe, your devices automatically begin enrollment in LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

Migrate Mac devices running macOS 15 or earlier to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM solution without performing a factory reset

With Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, you can easily migrate your Mac devices running macOS 15 or earlier to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM solution without wiping them.

Before you begin: To successfully change the MDM solution used on your Mac device, the following requirements must be met:
  • You must have an Administrator or Device Enrollment Manager role in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.
  • You must have physical access to the device.
  • You must have admin privileges on the device.
These instructions can be used to enroll your Mac devices running macOS 15 or earlier in LogMeIn Resolve MDM without having to perform a factory reset. However, we still recommend you wipe your devices when migrating them from another MDM server to avoid issues with enrollment.

Reassign your device to LogMeIn Resolve MDM in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager

  1. Integrate Automated Device Enrollment with your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.
  2. Set up your desired enrollment profile in LogMeIn Resolve MDM and assign it to the selected Mac device.
Tip: You can create multiple enrollment profiles in LogMeIn Resolve MDM and assign them to multiple devices.
  3. In Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, navigate to Devices, select the device to migrate, then select Edit MDM Server.
  4. Assign the selected device to your LogMeIn Resolve MDM server.

Remove the current MDM profile and enroll your devices in LogMeIn Resolve MDM

  1. Using your current MDM solution's instructions, remove the existing MDM profile from your device and ensure that the device is no longer managed.
  2. On the device, open the Terminal app and run the following command:
    sudo profiles renew -type enrollment

Result: The device is prompted to enroll with the new MDM profile in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

Results: The device contacts the LogMeIn Resolve MDM server and installs the enrollment profile. The device becomes supervised and appears in LogMeIn Resolve MDM for further management and configuration.

Migrate Apple devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later to LogMeIn Resolve MDM from another MDM server without performing a factory reset

The MDM server for Apple devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later can be changed in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Managed without performing a factory reset.

Before you begin: To successfully change the MDM solution used on your devices, the following requirements must be met:
  • The devices must be enrolled in your current MDM solution using Automated Device Enrollment.
  • The devices must run iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later.
When changing the MDM server for your managed devices, the devices will be unenrolled from your current solution and re-enrolled in LogMeIn Resolve MDM without wiping the device. This means that all personal data remains on the device, but managed configurations, settings, and policies are removed.
Note: Applications deployed through your current MDM solution might not be removed from Mac devices. However, they are removed from iPhone and iPad devices during the unenrollment process.
To ensure a smooth re-enrollment process, it is recommended that after you recreate all managed configurations, applications, and policies in LogMeIn Resolve MDM, you create a business policy that contains these. This way, all configurations, applications, and policies will be applied to the device when enrollment is finished and the business policy is applied to the device.
Important: Changing the MDM server of your managed devices in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager does not automatically apply the settings, configurations, applications, and policies created in your previous MDM solution to your devices when switching to LogMeIn Resolve MDM.
Migration is initiated from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager by changing the MDM server and setting a deadline by which the device user must complete enrollment on their device. If the user does not confirm enrollment by the time the deadline is reached, the device automatically unenrolls from the previous MDM solution and re-enrolls to LogMeIn Resolve MDM.
Note: If a deadline is not set, the user does not receive a notification about having to complete enrollment and must initiate it from the device's Settings application.

MDM migration: a high-level overview

While migrating your managed devices between MDM servers is minimally disruptive for the device user, it requires careful planning and execution.
Tip: Pilot the change on a group of devices to determine any possible configuration gaps.
  1. Map out your current configurations.
  2. Prepare your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site by setting up Apple Push Notification service, connecting Automated Device Enrollment, creating enrollment profiles, and, optionally, configuring Apple VPP.
  3. Create all required configuration profiles, managed configurations, policies, and applications and create one or more enrollment profiles on your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.
Tip: Use tags to easily identify devices to which these managed configurations must be applied.
  4. Change the MDM server for your devices in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager and set a deadline by which the device user must complete enrollment on their device.
Note: If a deadline is not set, the user does not receive a notification about having to complete enrollment and must initiate it from the device's Settings application.
  5. Update the device list on your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site and assign enrollment profiles to your devices.
  6. Have your device users complete enrollment.
  7. Monitor the enrollment process on your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.

Map out your current configurations

Prepare a list, export, or otherwise take note of the configuration profiles, applications, policies, and other managed configurations created and applied to your devices in your current MDM solution. The list should include, for example, all configuration profile settings, encryption settings, applications and their managed configurations, files, and certificates.

This list will help you recreate all managed configurations in LogMeIn Resolve MDM as well as let you compare your current MDM solution's features with LogMeIn Resolve MDM's capabilities.

Prepare your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site

Ensure that your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site is set up correctly for enrolling your Apple devices.
  1. Set up Apple Push Notification service on your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site.

Set up configuration profiles, applications, policies, and enrollment profiles for your devices

When you change the MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, your current MDM solution's managed configurations are not migrated to LogMeIn Resolve MDM. Instead, you need to recreate those configurations in LogMeIn Resolve MDM to apply them to your managed devices once they are enrolled.
  1. Optionally, remove any applications deployed through your current MDM solution from your devices.
Important: Applications and any data managed through the applications might stay on Mac devices after enrollment to LogMeIn Resolve MDM unless they are removed using the current MDM solution. However, they are removed from iPhone and iPad devices during the unenrollment process.
  2. On your LogMeIn Resolve MDM site, do the following:
    • Create the desired configuration profiles for your iPhone and iPad devices, and your Mac devices.
    • Add any applications to be installed on your iPhone and iPad devices, and your Mac devices. If needed, configure the applications' settings.
    • Add any certificates that may need to be deployed to your devices.
    • Create one or more enrollment profiles to be used during enrollment.
    • Optionally, create business policies to deploy configuration profiles, applications, files, and certificates to your devices in bulk, and Enable it.
Tip: Use the Apply to devices matching the following tags option to apply the business policy to your newly migrated devices with a specific tag.

Change your devices' MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager

  1. In Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, navigate to Devices and select the devices for which you want to change the MDM server.
  2. Select Assign Device Management from the ellipsis menu on the right.

  3. Select your LogMeIn Resolve MDM server from the Device Management Service drop-down list.
  4. In the Enrollment deadline section, set a deadline by which the device must be enrolled in the new MDM solution, then select Continue.
Note: If a deadline is not set, the user does not receive a notification about having to complete enrollment and must initiate it from the device's Settings application.

Result: The Assign Devices screen shows the progress of the device assignment.

  5. Select Done.

Results: Device users receive an Enrollment Required notification. The notification is repeated as follows:

  • Before the last 24 hours, the notification is displayed once every day.
  • In the last 23 hours, the notification is displayed once every hour.
  • In the last hour, the notification is displayed at 60-, 30-, 10-, and 1-minute intervals.

Assign an enrollment profile to your devices in LogMeIn Resolve MDM

An enrollment profile specifies what happens when new or factory-reset devices are turned on for the first time, and how the devices will be configured as part of Apple's Automated Device Enrollment feature.
  1. In LogMeIn Resolve MDM, navigate to Enrollment > Apple DEP.
  2. Select Update device list to synchronize your devices with LogMeIn Resolve MDM.
Tip: Use tags to easily identify devices to which these managed configurations must be applied.
  3. Assign an enrollment profile to your devices.

Complete enrollment

It is recommended that device users confirm enrollment on their device before the deadline is reached. Otherwise, the device automatically unenrolls from the previous MDM solution and re-enrolls to LogMeIn Resolve MDM.

The steps to complete enrollment vary depending on the device platform.

Complete enrollment on iPhone or iPad

  1. Select View on the Enrollment Required notification.

Result: The VPN & Device Management menu opens.

  2. Select Start Enrollment on the Enrollment Required prompt.
